The village of Rijeka Crnojevica: plunge into the color of an ancient, quiet town

It is best to go to Crnoevich (Tsrnoevich) by car, wherever you live in Montenegro, since there are no direct buses. Here at the foot of the black mountains lies one interesting fishing village of Rijeka of Crnoevich (Montenegrin. Rijeka Crnoeviča). This colorful place is already known to many travelers around Montenegro with the beauty of its surroundings!

The Crnoevich river itself can be seen on the road to Lake Skadar, stopping at sites with wonderful views of the lake and the river.

Historical note: in the Middle Ages, the city was a noisy and crowded center of trade and was the capital of the Zeta state on the territory of modern Montenegro in the second half of the 15th century. Both the river and the settlement near it are named after the ruler of the Middle Ages Zeta Ivan Crnoevich. Here was the residence of the Montenegrin medieval sovereign Ivan Crnoevich in the XIV and XV centuries.

Nowadays, a small town does not go unnoticed by many tourists. A tiny settlement (population not more than 250 people) stands on the banks of the picturesque river Crnojevića (Rijeka Crnojevića), which flows into Lake Skadar.

Walking along the beautiful restored promenade, you can visit the souvenir shop, a pier through which trade was carried out in the old days. Also along the river there are several restaurants serving excellent fish dishes, and a small hotel for those who plan to explore the town and the surrounding area for a couple of days. In the city, one cannot fail to note several ancient bridges - and one of them is the Danilov pedestrian bridge. The oldest building in the city is the home of St. Peter of Cetinje of the 18th century, the sovereign of Montenegro, who was once associated with this city. It is interesting to visit the monastery of St. Nicholas on the island of Rim.

An interesting fact: in this monastery at the end of the 18th century the first book in Montenegro was published.

The nature around the reservoir is beautiful at any time of the year. Along with the national parks of Durmitor and Lovchen, the canyons of Moracha and Tara rivers, the Durmitor nature reserve, this town on the Crnoevich river is famous for its natural beauty, wonderful views of the coast and, of course, views of the famous Skadar Lake, which can be reached by boat from the town. You can also ride a motor boat on the river Crnoevich for a small amount and stroll between the green hills covered with greenery.

Rijeka looks absolutely charming at the end of December, but you can relax from the many resorts of the country and get in touch with the quiet and cozy atmosphere of this place at any time of the year. It is possible to take long walks along the rugged Rijeka. Near the town there are several caves.

In summer, you can go down to the cave with the underground lake Žmrljevica, 6 km from the city.

The wild (Slavic title) "Obodska špilja" cave attracts speleology enthusiasts and is located 3 kilometers from the town; on the way to the cave one of the first Montenegrin hydroelectric power stations and colorful old mills will come across. Travelers can overcome the path both on foot and shorten part of the journey by car.

The town of Rijeka Crnoevicha is small marinas, colorful boats of local residents, silence and the mesmerizing beauty of nature.
