Historical note: it is known that in the Bronze Age on the territory of modern Ulcinj lived Illyrians - representatives of the tribes that inhabited the Balkan Peninsula in antiquity. According to historical data, the city itself appeared on this site in the 5th century BC. thanks to the greek colonists. Then the area was captured by the Romans, calling it "Olcinium". Hence, as is commonly believed, a modern name appeared. During the collapse of the Roman Empire, Ulcinj became a stronghold of pirates and at the same time the center of the slave trade, including from African lands. Therefore, even today you can easily meet black locals here.

What to see?

  • The adjacent part of the city
  • Great Beaxh (Velika plaža)
  • Island on the Boyana River (Ada Boyana)

Arriving in Ulcinj, first of all take a walk along its streets. They breathe a special atmosphere. Almost 80% of the population are Albanians, and also Muslims. Therefore, there are many mosques in the city, and all the names (streets, shops, bakeries) are duplicated in the Albanian language. Narrow cobbled streets lead you towards the Old Town. They are filled with noise, sometimes interrupted by the voice of the muezzin. Right on the beach is the Sailors Mosque, and the most famous Pasha Mosque is nearby. Continuing the journey to the Old City, be sure to go to the cafe and refresh yourself with a cup of Turkish coffee. The old city stands directly on the cape, surrounded by walls. Two paths lead into it: the first - from the harbor, the second - through the massive main gate from above. Both options are interesting. Here you can visit a museum with collections of antiquities, stroll through the maze of streets, take a selfie against the backdrop of the bay, known as Small Beach(Mala plaža). You can always eat in the many restaurants. Then we get into the car and drive further south, to the Great Beach.
