Going to popular monasteries and temples, of which there are more than one and a half thousand on the territory of the country, tourists consider it as a memorable event to visit the monastery of Moracha.


Traveling by car, it is convenient when visiting the canyons of the Tara and Morača rivers to look into this, currently relatively quiet monastery of monks.

Although the monastery is not included in the list of the most important religious monuments in the world, and here, indeed, such important Orthodox shrines as in the Cetinsky and Ostrog monasteries, as the relics of Basil of Ostrog, the Hand of John the Baptist or particles of the Life-giving Cross are not kept. Thousands of pilgrims of all confessions do not come to the monastery, but tourists who want to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of peace, surrounded by the grandeur and tranquility of towering black mountains.


Not far from the ski resort (Slavic title) Kolašin (25 km), at the end of a picturesque trail along the of the river Morača canyon, there is a monastery of the same name, in Serbian Manastir Morača.
While traveling, you will fully appreciate the natural beauty of the canyon, because the Morača Canyon is one of the most picturesque not only in Montenegro but also in Europe!
Through numerous tunnels cut in the rocks you can use the international road Podgorica-Belgrade we get to the monastery.
Located in the central part of Montenegro, this monastery is considered one of the most picturesque in this country, along with the Ostrog monastery and the Cetinje monastery.


Ancient history: the monastery was built on the right bank of the Morača in the middle of the 13th century by the grandson of the Serbian Grand Duke Stefan Nemanja and so has witnessed many historical events. The waterfall "Svetigor" flows into the waters of Morača, which originates from a stream flowing through the territory of the monastery complex.

The monastery is small, very neat and despite its significant age it seems modern.

The 13th-century fresco "The Raven Feeds the Prophet Elijah" an image of a prophet in the wilderness with a raven that brings him food is the oldest of the monastery's many frescoes. Valuable examples of the iconography of the Balkan Peninsula are the icon of St. Sava and the icon of the Holy Cross.
It is one of the most significant Serbian Orthodox monuments of the Middle Ages in the Balkans.

It also houses the first printed book of the South Slavs, printed at the end of the 15th century,аnd the library of the monastery contains an ancient handwritten Gospel.

The monks also grow roses, fruit trees, vegetables, e.g. squash, as well as a vast assortment of plants.

The oldest church on the territory of the monastery is the small church of St. Nicholas. Also on the territory of the complex there is a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos.



Morača was built at the intersection of lots of tourist routes. The monastery is so picturesque that this place has become extremely popular with tourists from all over the world.



On the way back, we will move by the picturesque Morača River, which comes to the surface already in Podgorica. The river in the valley of the city becomes quiet and flows into the famous Skadar Lake.
